Ashley Spolarich
Ashley Spolarich believes in ensuring that every client’s story is heard and understood, no matter how complex the case or challenging the circumstances. Growing up in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois, she graduated as valedictorian from Normal Community High School in 2002. Ashley has always had a strong desire to help people — especially those who feel powerless. While she originally considered a career in politics, she developed a love for criminal law during law school, which set her on the path to become a public defender.
“I originally thought that I would try to help people through the political process and trying to aid in the development of legislation,” she said. “But in law school I developed a love of criminal law, and protecting the rights of the accused. I still view defense attorneys as ensuring that the U.S. and Indiana Constitutions are followed.”
With more than a decade of experience as a public defender, Ashley has represented clients facing some of the most serious criminal charges. From homicides to complex financial crimes, she has handled 22 jury trials, countless court trials, and numerous motions to suppress evidence. Early in her career, she even co-counseled a double homicide trial while six months pregnant — a testament to her dedication and grit.
“As a Public Defender for 13 years, I would often represent poor people accused of some of the worst crimes,” Ashley explained. “I have always prided myself on being able to connect with most clients, seeing the humanity in someone despite the allegations they are facing. It’s not always easy, but I think it makes me a better attorney.”
In family law, Ashley brings the same level of care and advocacy to highly contested custody, parenting time, and relocation matters, as well as divorce and protective order cases. She also assists clients with wills, trusts, and estate planning, helping families plan for the future with confidence.
Beyond her practice, Ashley has served three terms as an elected member of the Indiana Public Defender Council Board of Directors, advocating for public defenders statewide through training initiatives, legislative advocacy, and policy development. She continues to donate her time to the Council, mentoring and training newer attorneys, and still takes on public defender cases to ensure that quality defense is accessible to all.
When she’s not in the courtroom, Ashley loves spending time with her husband, Aaron, and their young son. She also enjoys reading and traveling internationally — though she admits trips can be a bit more challenging with a little one in tow.
